Your contract is with the seller, and it is their responsibility to replace it if not fit for purpose, within "a reasonable time" - usually at least 12 months. This over-rides any warranty given with the device - which are usually designed to try to muddy the waters, not to help the customer !
Incidentally, their legal responsibility is not fullfiled by telling you to send it to Sony - they should do this, and any charges shoud be covered by them.
