Great for music streaming; not surround sound

I bought a pair to setup surround sound with Sony htnt5 sound bar. The srszr5 work great when streaming music individually or paired as group; not so great when used for surround sound. Could be improved with software update to allow user control or management.

I like the sound quality of this speaker much more than the Sonos Play:1 or the comparable Bose SoundTouch. It plays highs much clearer and crisper. The other reason I bought this over Sonos is the more open architecture of the network. However, the bluetooth often drops out for a beat or gets scratchy. I have only been able to get WiFi connection through the app to play music loaded on my phone, which sounds great, but the music will stop playing randomly. I then have to reopen the app, which often freezes, and restart everything. I have not been able to play any streaming services to the speaker through WiFi yet as the Google Cast button often doesn't appear on any of the supposedly supported services, except for Spotify which requires a premium account. Even Google's own 'Play' app doesn't have a Cast button. Luckily there are other ways to connect to this speaker, but it would be great if the WiFi/bluetooth worked as it was supposed to, so that this would be a wireless speaker. The manual and troubleshooting are extremely sparse for a speaker with so many options, and not much more information is available on the Sony site to try to resolve these issues.

I am an avid Sony fan, have been for many years and tbh these speakers donot disappoint, i am using 2 as a wireless stereo pair. Had them a few months now and am very happy with them. The provide quality room filling sound from such small speakers, bass is good, mid tones and treble comes through very well. Variety of wireless connections, also aux and hdmi inputs. So far I cannot find a reason to fault them, highly recommended.

L'enceinte "slave" décroche sans arrêt. J'ai des coupures incessantes. J'ai croisé les enceintes et le problème se situe toujours sur l'enceinte secondaire. Même quand je les positionne à 1 mètre sur mon bureau. Je pense qu'il y a un problème de conception du produit et je demande l’échange de celui-ci contre un produit équivalent mais qui fonctionne correctement.

I brought this speaker about a mouth ago. Happy so far sounds great. Song pal has been replaced with music center. onboard USB port only available via the music center app, ie you can select tracks via the device itself. Not used the HDMI port yet.

Good sound, but unreliable software

Owned this for 2 years now. Sound quality is very good across the full range of frequencies. Initial setup was very easy and initially created a home speaker network with our head unit (STRDN1080). We also bought this to be able to splay our music libraries from our computers onto the speaker network, but struggle to cast to more than one device from our computer. We can only play to the network via the cell phone app. The good news ends after initial setup however. The setup frequently needs to be re-done as the speakers stop working. We've even had to go so far as to do a full reset on the speaker at time to get it to work. Nothing worse than having guests over and having to trouble shoot your music system because it absolutely refuses to play anything. The speaker will also become disconnected from the phone controlling it at times. Sony really needs to invest more in their software and network support if they want this to be a viable product.

I bought two of these to connect to my MT-500 soundbar. After setting up i found them to be far too quiet. After fiddling around a bit with the on screen menu i found a way to turn up the volume on the paired system. Since then fantastic immersive surround sound. I am very pleased with the purchase. Stylish, great quality and fantastic sound.

Bought two of these with a htxt2 soundstage for 5.1 surround. Difficult to connect together and link drops out regularly. Soundstage has now broken so needs repair on warranty after failing 7 months in. Without soundstage these speakers are useless to me. Very poor product range.

l'application Music center qui est beaucoup trop complexe pour piloter les SRS-ZR5, elle se connecte une fois sur 5 aux enceintes, elle n'est pas du tout intuitive, je passe mon temps à me déconnecter et à les réacoupler. Mes enceintes me déçoivent beaucoup : trop de basses pas de clarté des paroles, trop compliqué à installer et paramétrer, elles ne s'allument pas automatiquement ni s'éteignent non plus, la distance entre les enceintes est trop court, elles se déconnectent. J’ai fait reprendre mes enceintes par mon revendeur.

Very good to listen to music while on holiday. (I like to listen to different kinds of music Pop/Jazz/Worldmusic/Greek/Classical....) Surprised by the sound, I tried out something different. (Mischa Maisky plays Back Cello Suite No. 1 in G ) Although I have to confess this tiny speaker plays in a different league than my audio home system, the sound is quite acceptable somewhat less airy than the big brothers (Kenwood LS 990)

I bought two of these to use as rear surround sound speakers for my Sony HTNT5 soundbar. They work great and it is easy to configure them and update their firmware, by downloading and using Sony's SongPal app on your cell phone. Retail price is a little steep, but you can often catch them on sale.

I bought the speakers to complete a surround sound system. It works, but teh instructions for the speakers/soundbar/TV are very confusing and contradictory at times. Also when turning the TV on with the soundbar it takes about 38 seconds for the sound to arrive at the speakers - when in wireless mode.

Got this as a Christmas present, and I already own a Sony TV soundbase. The two work really well together, I absolutely love the flexibility they offer with such a wide range of inputs. I can group both speakers as Chromecast devices or by using the Sony app, to play music or radio. This has so far been very convenient and reliable (the only times I've had problems is when my wifi signal has been weak). It's very convenient to also be able to connect to network sources, via bluetooth or a wire for certain devices as well. Sound quality is great for the speaker size, I've been really impressed with the volume it can put out, although to my untrained ear the trebles aren't always brilliant. I hope Sony continue to develop the music centre app, as although it has some good features it could be quicker and more convenient to use. I would highly recommend this speaker and am currently looking for a second, either for another room or to pair for stereo

Bought for awkwardly shaped room, with hardwood floors, so visible wires, weren't an option. Connected to Sony Sound Bar HT-CT800 effortlessly, using Sound Bar on screen set-up guide. Took maybe 3 minutes, and Left/Right rear channels were working immediately. Too early to gauge long term performance, but early experience, has been positive, and added an ambiance to the room that had been sorely lacking, for a long time! Speakers, though small are solidly built, and produce clear and powerful sound.

Habe mir gleich zwei gekauft um meine Soundbar HT-CT800 zu erweitern . Ich kann nur sagen es hat sich gelohnt . Ohne Boxen ist der Klang schon eine Klasse für sich aber mit den zwei SRS-ZR5 ist es der absolute Kracher . Zudem sind die SRS-ZR5 auch noch vielseitig verwendbar was jeder der diese Boxen kauft selber erfahren kann . Ich kann nur sagen der kauf lohnt sich in jeder Hinsicht und der Preis ist gerechtfertigt.

The speakers are fine. The multi room option is difficult to set up and use so I've given up. If you use them as rear surround sound rear speakers and then want to use the for multiroom it takes far to long to set up. Why can you only set up multiroom using the Music Centre App.

Beware!!. Bought a pair to get full wireless surround sound with my compatible sony tv and soundbar. very easy to set up wireless connection and sounds great but what i did'nt realise is that there is a fraction of a second delay in the audio from the picture. absolutely infuriating and spoils everything. Looked into it spoken to sony etc, no cure, can't even hard wire them and get surround sound. still deciding what to do. Any solutions (including you sony!) please let me know.

Very hard to find screws that fit this speaker for wall mounting. Have bought several different screws but nothing fits !!! In Sweden it is very difficult to find just the screws that fit. Otherwise OK speakers.

The reviews for this unit are all over the place. Perhaps that’s understandable, since we all have different levels of technical ability/comfort and the ZR5 can be used in many different ways. Different scenarios can present different challenges… I purchased two ZR5s to be used as a stereo pair in a small office. They flank a Sony XBR-43X800D and I sit about five feet away at 90 degrees from them. I listen to music mostly but occasionally watch TV news and once in a great while watch a Blu-ray on an Xbox that is ostensibly for the grandkids when they visit. I listened only briefly to a single ZR5. I thought the sound was about the same as a Bose SoundLink Revolve+ that I use outdoors. But I can’t say that I did any serious listening. Some have noted that the documentation was poor and the setup painful. There are so many functions that the printed documentation mentions everything but does not delve deeply into anything and is lacking in trouble-shooting advice. Since my TV and speakers are adjacent to my desk computer, I downloaded the PDF manual and pulled up the product support page on my browser before I started. I downloaded and used the SongPal app for configuration and set up a stereo pair without difficulty. I’d have to say that it was no more difficult than other recent setups and everything that I tested worked properly. You have to enable CEC on your TV to use the HDMI connection. I haven’t had any connection drops—my wireless router is close by. Bluetooth has also been flawless, but I’m only a few feet away at my desk and not roaming around. Music has been a treat—a real pleasure. Voices are crisp and clear. The bass is better than I expected. Although my B&W 803s floorstanders are naturally better, it’s nice to have satisfying sound at your desk and sitting five feet away from the speakers in the sweet spot does the trick. TV sound via HDMI or stereo minijack is much better than the native TV audio. I’d say it was equal to a soundbar without a subwoofer. While the ZR5 is nice for music bass, it falls short on Blu-ray explosions and car crashes. So for my usage scenario—mostly music, stationary listener, close proximity to wireless—these speakers are great. I’ve enjoyed them immensely. In fact, I’m curious to see how they would sound with a good soundbar and sub in a surround sound setup… for the grandkids, of course. YMMV. Good luck!

The reviews for this unit are all over the place. Perhaps that’s understandable, since we all have different levels of technical ability/comfort and the ZR5 can be used in many different ways. Different scenarios can present different challenges… I purchased two ZR5s to be used as a stereo pair in a small office. They flank a Sony XBR-43X800D and I sit about five feet away at 90 degrees from them. I listen to music mostly but occasionally watch TV news and once in a great while watch a Blu-ray on an Xbox that is ostensibly for the grandkids when they visit. Difficult to reconnect to sound stage

Am happy with the WiFi surround given by connecting wirelessly with my ht-xt2 sound stage. However if I turn off the speakers at night they do not connect seamlessly to the sound stage when turned back on again. Any guidance would be most helpful

Bought two of these to get wireless stereo but found them to be a bit unreliable. Sony support tried to help but couldn't solve it - not given up yet but I'm not sure they are up to it. Great sound and design otherwise, so it's disappointing. Operating as individual speakers they are great

Le son est très bon, plus profond et clair que le système équivalent Bose. Par rapport à sonos, je dirais que c'est un peu plus grave et moins immersif (Attention, je compare une enceinte Sony avec un système complet en multiroom). Sur du classique, les percussions donnent beaucoup de puissance au morceau. La musique électro-pop est parfaite sur cette enceinte. Le rock est un peu en retrait, même si la qualité est mille fois supérieure à notre ancienne chaîne hifi. La connectique est pléthorique connecté en 2min avec Nexus 5x. Une clé USB et l'enceinte cré un NAS avec tous les titres. Les Nexus 5 et 5x peuvent caster Spotify gratis via l'icône intégrée à Android sur les dernières générations. Les vieux Android et les Apple doivent payer un abonnement premium, mais ils ont l'habitude (de payer. ;-) chez Apple ). Ravis de cette enceinte, surtout avec mon Nexus 5x qui me permet d'avoir 90 jours Google play gratuit. Je vais sans tarder acheter une seconde enceinte pour créer un son stéréo.

I was given this as a christmas present and have found it to be an excellent piece of kit. The sound if fabulous for such a small speaker. I have all my albums on a USB drive and it works a treat. The SongPal software leaves a lot to be desired but can be used. I have also connected my bluetooth Akai deck to this speaker and the sound is great.....all the vinyls are back out of the cupboard.!

I bought two of these to provide stereo in a study as part of moving towards a multi-room audio system. Already had a Sony SRS-HG1 speaker in the kitchen which I liked and the 2 x ZR5s integrated seamlessly into my Google Cast system. A deeper sound than the HG1, smart minimalist look, linked easily to produce stereo, and have a decent range of connections to link in different ways. SongPal app that configures the speakers is problematic, and needs the Google Home app to group the speakers together for multi-room functionality, but so far I'm impressed. Sony back on form again

I bought my Sony SRS-ZR5 as a standalone bluetooth speaker to use with my Echo Dot. I wanted a speaker that would sound better than the Echo but, since I already own a Bose Soundlink Mini, portability was not something I needed. I looked at several speakers but none had such a wide range of features and connectivity. The speaker is always on, although if I switch it to 'Network Standby' mode a voice command to the Echo Dot will turn it on and reconnect it. The sound is excellent; It is clear, sharp and warm. Having read several reviews I was not disappointed. I use the speaker to listen to voice and music radio, Amazon Prime Music, and to cast my own music with Google Chromecast - it has replaced an ageing DAB/CD stereo. Set up was clunky with the SongPal app and I actually used the WPS function on the router in the end (the app could not complete set up and I gave up "trying again"). I have had cause to set it up again (router problem, not speaker) and used the NFC function with my Android smartphone, which worked flawlessly. The app is probably the weakest link in the system at the moment. I am delighted with the Sony SRS-ZR5. It fulfills the role for which it was purchased perfectly, and in combination with the Echo Dot has replaced the audio equpment I was using. It has a wealth of connectivity options, sounds fantastic and appears to be fairly future-proof. I intend to purchase another ZR5 in the near future for the stereo pairing capability, and may at that point connect the system to my television also via the HDMI.

Great speaker, poor connectivity

I like the sound quality of this speaker much more than the Sonos Play:1 or the comparable Bose SoundTouch. It plays highs much clearer and crisper. The other reason I bought this over Sonos is the more open architecture of the network. However, the bluetooth often drops out for a beat or gets scratchy. I have only been able to get WiFi connection through the app to play music loaded on my phone, which sounds great, but the music will stop playing randomly. I then have to reopen the app, which often freezes, and restart everything. I have not been able to play any streaming services to the speaker through WiFi yet as the Google Cast button often doesn't appear on any of the supposedly supported services, except for Spotify which requires a premium account. Even Google's own 'Play' app doesn't have a Cast button. Luckily there are other ways to connect to this speaker, but it would be great if the WiFi/bluetooth worked as it was supposed to, so that this would be a wireless speaker. The manual and troubleshooting are extremely sparse for a speaker with so many options, and not much more information is available on the Sony site to try to resolve these issues.
